Local Spotlight – Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

As the top Coconut Grove Salon, we know that our neighborhood has many great shops, restaurants, parks and tourist destinations that people who live or are visiting the city come to see. One of those attractions is the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, one of the great architectural landmarks in Miami. Formerly the home of a wealthy industrialist, it is now a museum and gardens for the public to enjoy.

Built in 1916 by industrialist Charles Deering, the tycoon enlisted over 1,000 workers and millions of man hours to build this extraordinary home, using some of the finest designers and buildings in the world. Marbles, stones, glass and wood was sourced from the farthest reaches of the globe to adorn this home and it is undoubtedly the finest home to ever be constructed in Miami.  With over 70 rooms throughout the room, they filled to the brim with antiques from Europe, many of which date all the way back to the 15th century.

Among the greatest features of this property are the extraordinary gardens that make up a significant part of the property. At over ten acres, the grounds have been kept meticulously manicured to exacting specifications. The Formal Gardens resemble the landscaping of the finest French palaces with low shrubs that form shapely walkways.  The Fountain Garden includes a centerpiece water fixture that was imported from Italy and still pours water almost 100 years later!

The property was only used by its owner for a short time as the owner died in the mid 1920s. But it has since been taken over by a non-profit and maintained to this day. Much of the home has been kept as it was last left in the 1920s. Because weather and climate have taken a toll on the mansion, the estate has been restored several times to ensure that it looks as it was in the early 20th century.
